The new ultra-low-NOx furnace requirements in Colorado have been set by the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission, which is part of the Department of Public Health. Effective January 1, 2026: 

  • 10 ng/J limit = gas inputs ≤ 75,000 BTU/hr or
  • 14 ng/J limit = gas inputs between 75,000 BTU/hr and 2,000,000 BTU/hr

In short, these formulas mean the furnaces can only produce a certain amount (nanograms) of NOx per Joule of energy produced. No other state in the country has set such stringent standards.

Will contractors still be able to install regular furnaces after the deadline?

No, contractors have to follow the law. All standard efficiency (80%) furnace installations must be ultra-low-NOx models that meet the new Colorado emissions standards. This is mandatory throughout the entire state, starting January 1, 2026. High efficiency furnaces, which are defined as furnaces with an efficiency rating of 96% or higher, will still be legal after January 1st, 2026.  However, not all single-family homes can accommodate a high-efficiency model. What is the difference between a low NOx and an ultra-low NOx furnace?
