Is It Time To Replace Your Old Air Conditioner?

Every appliance has an expected service life and that includes your air conditioner.  Or course, as a homeowner, you naturally want to maximize the service life of your air conditioner.  You want avoid the expenses and hassle of replacing it. That’s certainly understandable, but at what point is your best option to simply replace your old air conditioner rather than invest in repairs and routine maintenance?

These are all questions you need to ask before jumping into the big decision of replacing your older unit.

Typically, a central air conditioner should last you about 15 years. If your air conditioner is coming close to that age it may be time to consider a newer unit.  Ask yourself if it is worth the costly repairs. Are you better off upgrading to a new system?  Are you pouring more money into one that might soon give out entirely.

That is not the only reason to upgrade an aging air conditioning system, according to, “Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20% to 40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.” In other words, an older air conditioner can cost you money even  when repairs are not needed.  Remember, it is the efficiency of the unit or lack of that will  cause higher energy costs.
